Salzburg, Austria to Aquileia, Italy

So, our original plan was to spend 4 days in Salzburg, Austria. We got there on the 25th with plenty of time to walk around. Our first stop was the Hohensalzburg fortress which was really cool...it was way on top of a hill over looking the city which you can see below, and it's the biggest castle in...austria? europe? i forget, but it is huge!

View of Salzburg from Hohensalzburg

I don't know why this pic came out so small...but here we are :)

Inside the castle was really cool...and also very ornate. We're standing in front of a cool stove.

Inside the castle there was also a museum with a bunch of stuff from WWI & II...dad and I are standing next to a big bomb.

Yay - a cow!!! :) At one point, this castle had been under siege and they were running out of food. But, of course, they didn't want their enemies to know that....but they only had one cow left....so, they took the cow and showed it to the army down below...then painted the cow a different color and showed it again to the army below...they did this a couple times until the enemies thought they still had enough food.....and they gave up! GO COWS!! :)

Also, Austria is famous for the Sound of Music story...we tried to go visit the house used in the filming of the movie, but we couldn't get in it...Austrians hate that movie for some reason...

Here we are on a bridge and you can see Hohensalzburg in the background on the hill. Salzburg is also famous because Motzart was born there...we saw his house and the house he was born in, but we didn't go in them either.

This is Mirabell...there is a castle, but it has some really pretty gardens...and a particularly nice view of Hohensalzburg too!

Devon and I got to pet a unicorn!!!

We only ended up staying in Salzburg for 1 night instead of 3 because the weather forcasted all rain...and we were pretty sick of rain....so we decided to drive to Italy which was a little over 3 hours away! And we got to see a lot of the Alps on our way down there :)

Here I am driving through one of the million tunnles that go under the alps!

And we finally made it to our destination, Aquileia, Itay! yay! we were all so happy, as soon as we drove into Italy (on the 26th) it was like sunny and warm!

They have Pam supermarkets in Italy too!

We spent the first part of our day walking around the quaint little town...we saw lots of really old stuff, like a mosoleum, and some Roman ruins...and the Basilica which you can see partially in the background.

Here we are walking towards the Basilica...it was really old had a really beautiful mosaic floor on the inside.

Devon and I had to cover our shoulders while inside.

Here we are sitting on a really old bath of somekind...we think it was for baptizing people or something, but there were no signs telling us what it was!

We spent the rest of the day in Grado...a very beautiful city! It's actually an island and we drove over a cool bridge to get to it.

We walked along the coast of the Adriatic Sea until we came to the public beach and went for a swim :)

Grado had a couple canals in it too.

That night we thought there was supposed to be a piano bar type thing going on next to the basilica...at least that's what the brochure said...but we never found it...we just drank wine and roamed the streets of Aquileia at night instead :)

Aquileia mosaic said...

Nice trip. Aquileia is a small and quite insignificant town. In Aquileia not sightseeing place but its a archaeological site and has a UNESCO World Heritage status.Grado is a nice place for spend night. For history lover there are many places to see two museums, the famous mosaic and the outdoors sites in the basilica.
